In this demo, the clipping path will be the text of their names, Lily and Job. Clipped objects must be in the same layer or group.īy now you might be thinking… “What? I’m a visual learner.” Well I am too… so let’s demonstrate. However, one or more objects can be clipped. The clipping path must always be on top of the object you’d like to clip. However, the object below it can be anything – a raster photo, vector drawing, etc.Ī few things to note about clipping masks: A clipping path can only be a vector object, not a photo. What is a Clipping Mask?Ī clipping mask is a shape (called a clipping path) that masks any object below it, so only what’s inside of the clipping path is visible.
#Convert raster to vector illustrator cs2 professional#
Job and Lily have a love for professional swimming and we are going to use one of Illustrator’s brilliant design tools to show off their skills - the clipping mask. Try this technique on objects other that type to get more grunge text vector effects.Aloha, designers! Please meet Community Director, Jason Aiken’s sweet and totally-cute dogs, Job and Lily. Press the Expand button on your tool bar, and now you have grunge text vector art! It makes it easy to recall these setting. It is not a bad idea to save a preset in the Tracing Options. You don’t have to change all the options, just the ones below.

Or you can go Object > Live Trace > Tracing Options. Click the arrow beside the Live Trace Button and select Tracing Options. With the new image selected, the Control Panel defaults to the Live Trace options. Keep all the options the same, except change the Resolution to Use Document Raster Effects Resolution. With the grunge text selected, go Object > Rasterize. Both need to be rasterized before converting to vector. Right now, the text is essentially vector art masking out a raster image.

Currently, if you place the text over an element that isn’t white, you will see white in the text instead negative space.įirst you will have to rasterize the image. If you want to incorporate the grunge text vectors with other elements, it is a good idea to trace the image as a vector. You can change the font, color, kerning, or whatever! Moreover, you can edit the Effect by selecting Glass in the Appearance panel. That’s it! You can still edit the text without loosing the effect. In the options, use the following settings. With your text selected, go Effect > Distort > Glass. You can change this by going Effect > Document Raster Effects Settings and chose 300 dpi. This will generate the best quality in the effect. I suggest having the Raster Effects at 300 dpi. You should be alright if you have Illustrator CS2. This tutorial was created with Illustrator CS3.

This is the technique I use because it is quick and consistent, making it easy to create grunge text vectors. Don’t get me wrong, having some grunge can create a great deal of depth to a design or illustration, but there can be to much of a good thing. This might sound familiar, “I like it, but can we grunge it up more”. For a while, it seemed liked every client wanted grungy graphics.
